Fall 2024 – French Classes (online & on-site)

Online registration for our Fall 2024 session of French classes is open.

  • All courses will run for 9 weeks from September 30th to December 6th in 2-hour weekly classes. The start time of each class may be different. The number of students per online class is limited to 7. A class opens when a minimum of 3 students signed-up.
  • All online classes are delivered virtually with Zoom.
  • All on-site classes are delivered at our office, on 4901 Springarden Dr, Baltimore, MD 21209
  • If a class is cancelled by the AFB, your registration fee will be fully refunded.

Instructions

Instructions to Register for a Class or Workshop

  • To register in a class, other than Beginner 1, take a placement test and schedule a brief chat with us to sign-up for the appropriate class, or ask for information at info@afbaltimore.org.
  • Add your class to the cart and proceed to checkout.
  • PARTICIPANTS MUST BE A MEMBER of the Alliance Française de Baltimore to take classes. Please go to the Membership page to purchase a membership. If you are already a member, please login to your account.
  • For our general French group classes, a textbook and a workbook are required. Please order the books listed below and have them shipped before the start date of the class, if you do not have them yet. You can use the bookshop of your choice (amazon, MEP Education, ebay, etc):

Language Classes

Beginner A1-1 ONLINE

No prerequisite – This course is delivered online on Mondays and on-site on Thursdays

This class is designed for complete beginners.  The emphasis of French 101 is on very basic conversational skills. You will be able to introduce yourself and others, answer basic questions regarding your life and express personal likes and dislikes. You will also have learned the French alphabet, numbers and basic vocabulary

  • Grammar skills : personal pronouns, alphabet and the accents, gender of countries, definite and indefinite articles, conjugation of verbs être, s’appeler, ER verbs, verb avoir,  C’est / il est, interrogative adjective quel, parce que / pour, possessive adjectives in the singular form.  (A1 book: dossiers 0, 1)

Beginner A1-2 ONLINE

Prerequisite A1-1 or equivalent

Designed for students who have completed 101 or those who have taken French before but believe they have forgotten everything.  The focus of this class emphasizes basic conversational skills.  You will be able to ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know and things you own. You will be able to describe or make simple requests and invitations, understand date and time, and explain basic hopes and opinions.

  • Grammar skills :  prepositions of location, contracted articles, conjugation of verbs aller, prendre, habiter, venir, negation of the verbs, demonstrative adjectives, est-ce que and inversion to ask questions, etc ;  (A1 book: dossier 2)

You will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and phrases aimed at asking for directions, describing a place, giving orders, talking about the weather. You will also be able ask for information and tell a story with the use of past tenses.
